Barbara Smith Evans Appointed as Part-Time U.S. Magistrate Judge

BARBARA SMITH EVANS APPOINTED PART-TIME UNITED STATES MAGISTRATE JUDGE FOR THE DISTRICT OF NEW MEXICO

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – On September 11, 2018, the United States District Court for the District of New Mexico appointed Barbara Smith Evans as Part-Time United States Magistrate Judge.  The position, which is for a 4-year term, is located in Roswell, New Mexico.

Ms. Evans obtained her B.A. from Texas Tech University and her J.D. from Washburn University School of Law.  Following law school, Ms. Evans served as a law clerk for the Honorable Dale E. Saffels, United States District Judge, and the Honorable K. Gary Sebelius, United States Magistrate Judge, both of the United States District Court for the District of Kansas.  After practicing in Kansas and Missouri, Ms. Evans returned home to New Mexico where she served for two years as a law clerk for the Honorable Bobby R. Baldock of the United States Court of Appeals for the Tenth Circuit.  In 2007, Ms. Evans joined Atwood, Malone, Turner & Sabin, where she will continue her practice in employment and civil rights litigation.

Ms. Evans was selected from a pool of applicants for the Part-Time Magistrate Judge position.  A Magistrate Judge Merit Selection Panel, consisting of attorneys and lay persons from around the state, reviewed the applicants and reported their recommendations to the district’s United States District Judges, who then made the final determination after interviewing the candidates.
