National Day of Mourning for President James Earl Carter – January 9, 2025

Friday, January 3, 2025

The United States District Court for the District of New Mexico recognizes January 9, 2025, as a National Day of Mourning in honor of the life and legacy of President James Earl Carter. As the 39th President of the United States, President Carter's leadership was marked by a deep commitment to peace, human rights, and social justice. His administration championed the Camp David Accords, which brought lasting peace between Egypt and Israel, and he initiated key environmental policies that continue to shape the nation's ecological future.

Following his presidency, President Carter's devotion to service extended beyond political office. His tireless work through the Carter Center, particularly in advancing global health, democracy, and conflict resolution, earned him the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002. He served as an exemplar of humility, integrity, and compassion, both in his public and private life.

On this solemn day, we pause to reflect on his extraordinary contributions to our nation and the world.

Please note, while the courthouses in this district will remain open on January 9, 2025, each presiding judicial officer will determine their calendar for the day.

The Court joins the nation in mourning the passing of President Carter and extends its condolences to his family and all who were touched by his remarkable life.
